Kablusiak wins 2023 Sobey Art Award grand prize

Canada’s preeminent contemporary arts award recognizes artist for practice that confounds old categories and points to new imaginaries.

Kablusiak is the grand winner of the 100,000 CAD 2023 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s preeminent prize for contemporary visual arts. The announcement was made Saturday evening by 2022 Sobey Art Award winner Divya Mehra during a special celebration at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC). The remaining shortlisted artists—Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Michèle Pearson Clark, Anahita Norouzi, Séamus Gallagher—will each receive 25,000 CAD.

The Sobey Art Award recognizes Canadian visual artists at a critical juncture in their careers and whose work reflects upon and speaks of our contemporary moment nationally and globally. Kablusiak is a multidisciplinary Inuvialuk artist and curator who uses Inuk ingenuity to create work in a variety of mediums, including lingerie, white flour, soapstone, felt, acrylic paint, and words. The artist’s work explores dis/connections and family and community ties within the Inuit diaspora, as well as the impact of colonization on Inuit expressions of gender and sexuality, on health and wellbeing, and on daily life. Kablusiak was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and they are currently based in Calgary, Alberta.

Five presented with British Empire Medals at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

Anna Turner, the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, has presented five people with their British Empire Medals, which were awarded in the New Year Honours 2024.

They were:

  • Olive Arnold BEM – For services to the community in Bronington, Shropshire.
  • Paul Rushworth BEM – Founder, Professionals with Alzheimer’s. For services to charity.
  • Richard Charles Fowler BEM – Library Lead, Harbury Community Library, Warwickshire. For services to libraries.
  • Mabel Elsie Finnigan – County Captain, Shropshire Ladies Bowls Team. For services to bowls.
  • Kathleen Louisa Kynaston – Lately Chair, Shrewsbury Amateur Swimming Club. For services to swimming and to the community in Shropshire.

Five ‘incredible’ British museums nominated for arts prize

Museums in Skipton, Dundee, Manchester and London will compete for the 2024 Museum of the Year award.

Three of this year’s five shortlisted museums have undergone major renovations, only reopening in the last 18 months.

The shortlisted institutions cover museums spanning portraits, natural history, science, textiles, fine art and children’s creativity spaces.

The winner, announced on 10 July, will receive £120,000, while £15,000 will be given to each of the other four finalists.

Catalyst: Creative residencies in Cumbria – three artists selected and awarded £25,000 each

A poet, a visual artist and a musician have each been awarded £25,000 to each create a brand new piece of art for Cumbria over the next 10 months.

More than two hundred artists from across the UK submitted applications as part of the Catalyst creative residencies in Cumbria project, a unique collaboration between Art Gene in Barrow, the University of Cumbria, and Cumbria Arts and Culture Network. The call out was launched on 5 February.
