2025 Taoyuan International Art Award Open Call Starts in April 2024
The open call for submissions to the third 2025 Taoyuan International Art Award, organized by the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA), will take place from April 1 to 26, 2024. This Award is for new works presented publicly for the first time and which have never entered government-organized competitions in Taiwan. Artists may participate as individuals or groups regardless of nationality or age.
The predecessor to the Taoyuan International Art Award was the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Award, which has been one of the most significant contemporary art competitions in Taiwan since 2001. In 2020, the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Award rebranded itself and launched the first “2021 Taoyuan International Art Award”. The Award is now to be held every two years, with an international jury. The scope of open calls has also now been extended globally, thereby strengthening international exchanges and laying a solid foundation for artistic research and creation. For this edition, the Grand Prize winner receives NTD 600,000, and three Honorable Mention winners each receives NTD 200,000. In addition, a Sojourn Award of NTD 350,000 will be offered to a Taiwanese artist for a tour abroad to inspire creations and cultivate artistic talents.

Veteran and artist Barry John MBE has been chosen from 11 finalists as the overall winner if the British Contemporary Art Awards 2025.
The awards are run by British Contemporary Art, a curated website featuring the best of British painters and paintings, set up by the Harbour Gallery’s Mark David Hatwood FRSA.
Barry’s work Celtic Roots was shortlisted in the final. It has been named the winner by public vote.

THE National Arts in Hospitals Network (NAHN) is celebrating success after scooping a top accolade at the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Health and Well-being Awards.
Hosted by NHS Charities Together, NAHN was named the winner of the Arts and Health Award 2024 in recognition of its pioneering National Health Stories project marking 75 years of the NHS.
Led by British actor, playwright and director, Kwame Kwei-Armah OBE, National Health Stories invited NHS staff from 19 NHS trusts across England to tell their stories of working for the organisation through different art forms, including music, poetry, painting and writing.

Will 2024 mark the year AI art went mainstream? Each year, the Frieze London Artist Award gives its winner the chance to debut an ambitious commission at the fair. This time, the spotlight was on Lawrence Lek. His playable game and hard-hitting video – though at five minutes, too long for the fleeting attention spans of most fairgoers – follows the absurdist story of an AI ‘carebot’ who wrestles with an uncanny kind of human self-doubt.
Ben Luke, host of The Art Newspaper’s podcasts and former Standard critic, describes Lek as “neither a blind evangelist nor a sceptic” of new technologies. It’s fitting, then, that his installation leaves you lingering somewhere between fascination and fear.
