What ART SG reveals about Singapore’s booming art scene

Artists, gallerists, curators and collectors convened in Singapore last week (19-21 January) for ART SG, the newest addition to the international art fair circuit. Over the course of one weekend, a record-breaking 43,500 visitors descended upon the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre to take part in Singapore’s new flagship art fair.

The second edition of ART SG featured presentations by 114 galleries from 33 countries and territories, situated within a wider program of large-scale installations, industry talks and film screenings. This year’s fair also coincided with Singapore Art Week, which is now in its 12th year.

Frieze Seoul’s 3rd edition to revive Seoul art scene

Frieze Seoul will return in September with its third edition, launching the inaugural Frieze Live to spotlight performance-based art and strengthen ties with the local art scene.

Some 110 galleries from around the world will participate in the art fair, which runs Sept. 4-7 at Coex in southern Seoul. Dubbed “Frieze Week,” the week features late-night gallery openings, a variety of special exhibitions at local art institutions and on-site programs such as Frieze Film and Frieze Music.

“We are very excited to host Frieze Seoul this September, as the fair continues to serve as an important regional hub. We look forward to drawing diverse audiences to the fair and highlighting the wonderful presentations of the participating galleries,” said Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul.

Creatives who revitalised Oman’s art scene to represent country at Venice Biennale

Oman is returning to the Venice Biennale for the second time. The country will be represented with a National Pavilion that will showcase the works of five Omani artists who have been praised for “revitalising” the country’s contemporary art scene.

The artists involved include Ali Al Jabri, renowned for large-scale sculptures made of marble and wood; Essa Al Mufarji, known for his clay-based works, which vary in scale; artist and photographer Sarah Al Olaqi, who is also the founder of Muscat’s Cure8 Art Gallery; and Adham Al Farsi, who is known for interactive installations and has been a driving force in Oman’s cultural scene for almost three decades.

Malath – Haven will be curated by Alia Al Farsi who, in 2017, became the first Omani artist to participate in the biennial. Al Farsi’s work will also be on display in the exhibition.

How White Cube New York’s Gallerist Is Changing the City’s Art Scene

Last fall, when the prestigious London gallery White Cube opened its first public space in New York City, it tapped a trailblazer with an unorthodox path in the industry. Growing up in Sri Lanka, Sukanya Rajaratnam didn’t consider art an obvious career choice. Instead, she studied economics at Cambridge and went to work in investment banking, specializing in underappreciated assets. Now, as global director of strategic market initiatives at White Cube New York, she’s leveraging her business background to shine the spotlight on unsung artists.

Rajaratnam made the move from finance to the art world with an unpaid internship at Christie’s auction house, where she started by writing catalog copy for the evening sales. She went on to spend 15 years at New York’s Mnuchin Gallery, 10 as partner. “I was in a unique position to see the value in underrepresented artists,” Rajaratnam says, her work driven by mission as much as the market. That eye helped boost the careers of artists such as the late Ed Clark, Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, and David Hammons.
