These Collectors Convinced Rome’s Barberini Palace to Have Its First Contemporary Art Show

Tony Salamé, the Lebanese entrepreneur behind Aïshti luxury department stores, always had the collecting bug. Long before he developed an affinity for Richard Princes and Raymond Pettibons, he’d collect stamps, carpets, and other objects easily accessible as a university student in Beirut. During the late 1980s, Salamé started traveling frequently to Italy for his job as a fashion buyer, and it’s there that his journey to becoming one of the world’s top art collectors was ignited, first with 18th-century paintings, and during the early 2000s, Arte Povera, an Italian avant-garde movement that emerged in the 1960s.

Today Salamé, who now also has Italian nationality, and his wife Elham share homes in Milan, New York, and Beirut, where they opened the Aïshti Foundation, a private contemporary art museum, in 2015. Through building their fashion and art empires, the Salamés have become the ultimate global citizens. “Tony is a voracious enthusiast animated by an insatiable curiosity. He speaks four languages fluently—often in the same sentence. He is always informed about everything, and he can be at ease anywhere in the universe,” Massimiliano Gioni, the Italian-born curator and artistic director of New York City’s New Museum, says.

Satellite Art Show has announced that it will host an Art Fair in Austin in 2025 during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, taking place March 7-15.

Founded in 2015, Satellite is a New York-based artist-run platform that presents projects in Miami, New York, and Austin. In 2019, the Satellite Art Show debuted in Austin at the Museum of Human Achievement. However, this will be the first time it has returned to the city since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 SXSW.

This year, the organization is presenting Satellite Ranch, an art fair on a 10-acre property located at 719 Shady Lane, across from Hi-Sign Brewery in East Austin. Satellite Ranch will feature public installations on the grounds and exhibitions inside four homes.

Keiichi Tanaami’s psychedelic art comes to ICA Miami in first solo US show

The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), Miami, is currently presenting Keiichi Tanaami: Memory Collage, the first solo museum exhibition of the acclaimed Japanese artist in the United States. Tanaami (July 21, 1936 – August 9, 2024) is well known in Japan for a six-decade career bridging American and Japanese post-war pop art through his disorienting psychedelic collage style. The show is organised by ICA Miami and is on view from November 21, 2024 – March 30, 2025. It is curated by Alex Gartenfeld, the institute’s Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director, along with Gean Moreno, director of Art + Research Center, ICA Miami. The curators join STIR for an interview that explores Tanaami’s articulation of pop culture and the link between his work and traditional Japanese art forms.Tanaami often featured popular Japanese and American fictional and real characters as a means of highlighting the influence of mass media on our collective psyches.– Alex Gartenfeld, Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director, ICA Miami

Tanaami’s work is heavily informed by his experiences growing up in Japan during and after the Second World War, as he was haunted by childhood memories of time spent in air raid shelters during American bombing runs. Symbols of violence, ranging from real-world firearms and American bomber jets to fantastical depictions of alien invasions, are spread throughout his oeuvre. The artist mashed these up with sexual imagery, particularly of the sort seen in older editions of American adult magazines such as Playboy (he would also spend time as the first art director of Japan’s Monthly Playboy, which ran from 1975 – 2009). Tanaami’s art also prominently features popular American and Japanese characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Ultraman.
