President instructs to reopen National Art Gallery before year end

President Ranil Wickremesinghe undertook an inspection tour of the John de Silva Memorial Theatre and the long-delayed National Art Gallery on Tuesday (Mar 26).

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), despite construction commencing in 2011, both projects remain incomplete.

President Wickremesinghe instructed officials to expedite the opening of the National Art Gallery before the year’s end, emphasizing the need for consensus among artists and architects. He also pledged government support for financial allocations. 

Additionally, he highlighted the demand for high-standard, affordable theatres in Colombo, questioning if such facilities could be provided following the completion of the John de Silva Theatre.

Manor house renovated as home and art gallery

A Grade II* listed manor house built in the 17th Century has been restored and brought back into use as a family home.

Burderop House in Chiseldon, Wiltshire, which was redesigned into its current neo-classical square design in the 18th Century, had been used as offices for several decades.

Property developer, Arthur Dallimer, has now converted the house into a home with a downstairs space turned into an arts venue.”I’m very happy to have been able to have brought back one of the town’s most beautiful buildings into its original use like this,” he said.

Crafted by artisans Hugo Osorio and Pedro Fuentes, this underwater sculpture gallery located near Isla Fuerte is not just a visual spectacle but also a vital sanctuary for marine life.

Comprising 25 intricately designed figures each standing at a height of 1.5 meters, the gallery serves as an artificial reef offering refuge to corals endangered by the impacts of tourism and climate change.
