Nelson Middle School’s art exhibit opened March 27 and will run through April 15.

The theme for the show is “Beauty and the Beast (but not the Disney kind)” and will showcase multiple artwork from different grades.

One of the art styles that the students will be using for the show is stippling, is where the artist uses dots to create their piece.

“How this goes in the theme is that the beauty is the art created but the beast part is that the work takes forever and kills their hands,” Laurie Davis, Nelson Middle School’s visual art teacher, said.

Art student Caroline Cason, chose to use one of the smallest Micron pens for her stippling piece which meant she had to use more detail and it took more time to complete.

Cason and student Ayri Lawhorn decided to do their stipplings on musicians. Cason did hers on a member from her favorite band and Lawhorn chose to do hers on singer Lana Del Ray.

Art Encounter and the Center for Independent Futures have joined hands, for the third year in a row, to mount an exhibit of artwork at the Coffee Lab, 910 Noyes St. The works are the result of a program of creative workshops and social connection offered by Art Encounter and teaching artist Val McCune, a 10-year Evanston resident.

The 10 adult participants from the Art Club are showing their artwork on the east wall during the month of April, with at least two pieces from each person being shown. The coffeeshop is chock full of artwork, so the exhibit, entitled “This is Us,” has a lot of competition.
