Jerry Pinto remembers the history of art in Mumbai as Chemould celebrates 60 years

This was a gallery that began quite by accident. A car owned by the Belgian Van Dammes got stuck, two Gandhy brothers came by and offered to help. A friendship was born and the two families got together and started a framing factory. The framing factory led to a frame shop on what was then called Princess Street and out of these odd beginnings one of the great institutions of modern Indian art was born: Gallery Chemould. For it did not just mean a place where art could be seen and bought but it threw up an unlikely messiah for the Progressive Artists (MF Husain, SH Raza, FN Souza, SK Bakre, KH Ara, HA Gade) and many who followed. Kekoo Gandhy was tireless in his campaign to get Indian art on the world map and invincible in his belief that it was going to happen soon, if not sooner. When Gallery Chemould moved out of its nest in the Jehangir Art Gallery, it felt like the institution had eviscerated itself. At least three generations of the city had walked through its doors and discovered the magic of art.

“Groundbreaking” new methods could help establish if three further paintings by John Constable have been discovered, scientists said.

Pigments of the works are being tested at the University of Bradford to see if they were painted by the renowned 19th Century artist.

Constable, who lived between 1776 and 1837, was known for his landscape paintings of the English countryside.

‘More than Meets the Eye’: Unveiling Saudi Arabia’s cross-generational art history

Saudi Arabia’s long, cross-generational art history will be unveiled in the ‘More than Meets the Eye’ exhibition held in AlUla, the heart of the Kingdom’s burgeoning arts scene.

Running from February 9 to April 27, the showcase of contemporary works by Saudi artists on loan from collectors in Saudi Arabia will be hosted by Arts AlUla at the Maraya concert hall.

The exhibition – curated by Saudi pioneer artist Dr. Effat Abdullah Fadag – will present the history of the contemporary art movements in Saudi Arabia, documenting the story of artists and the role of collectors in the development of the art scene.
