Five ‘incredible’ British museums nominated for arts prize

Museums in Skipton, Dundee, Manchester and London will compete for the 2024 Museum of the Year award.

Three of this year’s five shortlisted museums have undergone major renovations, only reopening in the last 18 months.

The shortlisted institutions cover museums spanning portraits, natural history, science, textiles, fine art and children’s creativity spaces.

The winner, announced on 10 July, will receive £120,000, while £15,000 will be given to each of the other four finalists.

UK’s first LGBTQ museum unveils 2024 Madame F Queer Britain Art Award winner

Tony Mentel has been announced as the winner of this years’ Madame F Queer Britain Art Award.

His work View from Dukes Mound [below] is now on display at Queer Britain, the UK’s first national LGBTQ+ museum, in London’s Granary Square. Mentel will receive a cash prize of £1500 for his win.

A reception to mark the occasion was hosted at Queer Britain last night (4 June 2024). Last year’s winner Oliver Freeston presented Mentel with the prize.

2024 biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards Call for Artists

Entries are open for the biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards 2024!

The North Queensland Ceramic Awards showcases well-known and emerging artists and offers a $10,000 major acquisitive prize.

Selected works will be on display at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery from 18 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 and will be eligible in various categories beyond the major City of Townsville Art Collection Award.

Five presented with British Empire Medals at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

Anna Turner, the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, has presented five people with their British Empire Medals, which were awarded in the New Year Honours 2024.

They were:

  • Olive Arnold BEM – For services to the community in Bronington, Shropshire.
  • Paul Rushworth BEM – Founder, Professionals with Alzheimer’s. For services to charity.
  • Richard Charles Fowler BEM – Library Lead, Harbury Community Library, Warwickshire. For services to libraries.
  • Mabel Elsie Finnigan – County Captain, Shropshire Ladies Bowls Team. For services to bowls.
  • Kathleen Louisa Kynaston – Lately Chair, Shrewsbury Amateur Swimming Club. For services to swimming and to the community in Shropshire.
