Building site becomes outdoor art gallery
The exterior of Heywood’s much-loved civic theatre has been turned into a colourful outdoor art gallery, thanks to artists from across Greater Manchester.
Last year local arts network Culture Co-op put out a call for artists interested in creating artwork to be displayed on hoardings covering Heywood Civic while the site is closed for a major refurbishment.
Sixty artists submitted 90 artworks before a final ten were selected by the Heywood Cultural Pioneers – a panel of local residents.
This week the artists were invited to the site on Lance Corporal Stephen Shaw MC Way in the town, to see the gallery for the first time as it was officially unveiled.

Three in five small UK museums and galleries fear closure amid declining revenue, new research suggests
Three in five small museums and galleries in the UK fear closure amid declining revenue and footfall, research published this week suggests. The survey of 40 small, independent attractions—those with fewer than 100,000 annual visitors—also found that four in five (78%) reported the current period as the most challenging the sector has faced, while over half (58%) said overall income has not returned to its pre-Covid levels.
The research, conducted by the cloud platform GoDaddy in partnership with the charity Kids in Museums, surveyed small museums as well as galleries, historic buildings and heritage sites. Alison Bowyers, the executive director of Kids in Museums, tells The Art Newspaper that UK museums are suffering more than their counterparts in mainland Europe.
