In a significant move to support the cultural sector, the German government has announced a reduction in the VAT rate on artwork sales from 19% to 7%. This change, set to take effect in January 2025, marks a pivotal shift in policy aimed at bolstering galleries and art dealers throughout the country.

The initiative reverses a decision made 10 years ago when the tax benefit was removed for dealers following an EU directive. Currently, only direct sales made by artists are eligible for the reduced, 7% rate—beginning January 2025, this will be extended to gallery sales, too.

Is the earth alive? This is a question that poets, philosophers, scientists and sociologists have been trying to find the answer to since time immemorial. In the early 1970s, chemist James E. Lovelock and biologist Lynn Margulis came up with the The Gaia Hypothesis. It theorised that the earth is a living organism that regulates and maintains all the natural processes — an entity that is greater than the sum of all of its living and nonliving aspects. If this has caught your intrigue, you must check out a visual representation of the quest in the art exhibition Organic Reverie, which has debuted in town recently at Gallery Time & Space.

“Each work in this collection serves as a window into the organic world, capturing not just the picturesque aspect of nature but also the spiritual energy that animates every living being withinthe environment,” Renu George, Director of Gallery Time & Space, tells us. She further notes, “There is an element of human intervention but only at the simplest level, highlighting the essential supremacy of nature. The artworks have not been commissioned for the show but have been chosen from the work done spontaneously by the artists; so each work demonstrates unique skill, emotion and authenticity.”
