At Art Basel, Collectors Take a Field Trip—Is It All Just a Rural Fantasy?

When I was an undergrad in the early 2000s, taking classes in the pastoral genre was considered to be, how could I put this, kind of a joke.

As a form of literature, art, and music that idealized the lifestyle of the shepherd, herding livestock and bathing in the wisdom of nature, it speaks to a simple, peaceful rural life in direct contrast to the filth and grit of urban cities. We sniffed at the sentimentalism of pastoral ideals, at the romanticized view of the countryside, at the hippie who walked into the class barefoot and with a feather in her hair. We wanted radical Marxism and intersectional feminism, thank you very much! The closest we came to spending serene time in the great outdoors was at raves in the nearby forest—and let’s face it, hugging a tree while on ecstasy doesn’t exactly count in the pastoral tradition.

What should everyone have in their bag when visiting an art fair?

Aileen Agopian: An iPhone, one extra charger, and definitely mints.

Sabrina Buell: I wear a small cross-body bag. It’s the Art Olympics and you don’t want to carry unnecessary weight all day. In it is my phone, which I use to take pictures of the works I acquire for my clients. I always have a fair map circled with galleries and works of interest noted.

Organisers of more than 40 art fairs, including Art Basel, Frieze and Tefaf, have pledged to halve their greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in a new alliance formed by Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC). The commitment coincides with Climate Week NYC, the largest annual event of its kind (to September 29). Data provided by GCC found that, for a typical, midsize commercial art gallery, one-third of annual carbon emissions related to activities around art fairs. Air travel (of art and people) accounts for the bulk, while these pop-up events, many held in temporary structures, have specific issues of their own, including single-use materials and energy consumption.
