UK government hands carnival creatives an intangible Christmas present

It’s taken 20 years, but the UK is belatedly about to join the 182 civilised nations of the world that care enough about their culture to wish to safeguard it for posterity.

On 23 December, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced that the UK would ratify UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Portrait of Kettering space-pioneer presented to the Science Museum in London

In the 1960s the Kettering Grammar School satellite tracking group founded by Geoff Perry, Head of Physics, and Derek Slater, Head of Chemistry, came to national and international prominence when, during the cold-war era, they were able to announce to the world the location of a Soviet satellite base previously unknown to NASA.

New Year Honours recognise National Portrait Gallery, Horniman, National Trust workers

The King’s New Year’s Honours has been announced, recognising those making contributions to the museums and heritage sector. More than 1,200 appointments were made.

The annual tradition follows King Charles’ first Birthday Honours list, announced in 2023.

Raphael artwork ‘features a face he did not paint’

An oil painting thought to be created by the famous Italian artist Raphael features a face that he did not paint, according to scientists.

Researchers in the UK used artificial intelligence technology to analyse Madonna della Rosa (Madonna of the Rose), which was painted in early 16th century and is believed to be one of the many Madonnas painted by the Renaissance master.
