Top art exhibitions in the UAE and Saudi Arabia to see this spring

As the calendar ticked over to 2024, art institutions in the Gulf began setting the stage for some of their best exhibitions of the year.

The UAE will host Art Dubai and March Art Week, while Saudi Arabia has a growing fixture of events anchored by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation as well as exhibitions and biennials staged in AlUla.

Here is a mix of blockbuster shows and calmer retrospectives to catch in the coming months.

‘Groundbreaking’ UK exhibition spotlights work of disabled, D/deaf and neurodivergent artists

A new exhibition opening today at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) brings together contemporary works by 15 disabled, neurodiverse and D/deaf artists, in what curators describe as the first survey of its kind at a significant public gallery.

Addressing issues of representation and care, Towards New Worlds features work spanning the “visual arts”, while bringing into question the very definitition of the term. Sounds, smells and textures are carefully integrated throughout a distinctly calming space, pushing the boundaries of the traditional gallery experience

Clasutta, Zita Nuella, Tusita Mangalani hold ‘Ad Maiora’ art exhibition

E merging artists Clasutta, Zita Nuella and Tusita Mangalani have banded together to hold the art exhibition Ad Maiora, touching on introspective themes of the self. Running from July 13 to Aug. 1 at D Gallerie, South Jakarta, Ad Maiora is the trio’s first ever exhibition, taking its name from the Latin phrase “ad maiora natus sum” (we are born to aim for greater things).

“As newcomers, we are aware that our big aspirations in the arts must be accompanied by persistence. In the past year, we have learnt to overcome our differences and nurture our professional skills from small habits that we’ve worked and improved consistently,” Clasutta said.

National museum hosts Goodbye Art exhibition

Blurring the lines between selling art and the art itself is the aim of a new exhibition at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts.

Twenty artworks by Vietnamese contemporary artist He Quach Bac are on show at Goodbye Art which highlights an installation named (Goodbye my art)ⁿ taking a mathematically-inspired approach to the artist’s works.

Quach Bac continues to propose a ceaseless transactional process of buying and selling art, with all the certificates and artworks being endlessly integrated and intertwined to infinity.
