These are the art exhibitions to see in Europe this year
t’s not just art that has the potential to be political – decisions around what to hang on the walls of museums and galleries prove similarly fertile ground for discussion and debate. For proof, look no further than this year’s European exhibition calendar: Bergen’s Kode Museum has opted to put Indigenous art centre stage; Kunstmuseum Basel highlights 100 years of Black figuration, and Paris’ Centre Pompidou gives a female pioneer of digital art some much-due attention.
Germany this year celebrates the 250th anniversary of one of the German Romantic movement’s most prominent painters: Caspar David Friedrich, the creator of Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, a painting considered one of the most significant works of the Romantic era and a cultural icon. Friedrich’s hometown, Greifswald, is organising a programme of events throughout 2024, and his vast oeuvre will be on display at shows across Germany. The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, which houses one of the world’s largest collections of Friedrich’s paintings, is hosting its first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the artist, titled Infinite Landscapes, while Hamburg’s Kunsthalle combines a thematic retrospective with works by contemporary artists. Art for a New Age reveals how topical Friedrich’s landscapes remain: at the time of their creation, they stood for a new relationship between humans and nature. Considering today’s climate challenges, his work feels more pertinent than ever.

Fundraiser for Animals 26th March – 6th April 2025 Helping Paws presents DOWN TO THE BONE 2, a collective art exhibition to raise funds for animals in the UK and overseas. 26 March – 6th April. 54 artists from around the country have contributed paintings and sculptures. Artists include Dr Marc Abrahams OBE, or ‘Marc the Vet’, author, broadcaster, TV personality and animal welfare campaigner based at The Mewes Vets in Rottingdean, Romany Mark Bruce, painter and creator of the Brighton AIDS Memorial, and Sarah Sellers a Rottingdean resident who is the daughter of the late Peter Sellers.
The Art Fringe is proudly presenting “Through the Eyes of Women”, its biennial exhibition marking International Women’s Day (IWD). Through art, the exhibition aims to amplify and celebrate the voices of creative women. Female artists practising in a variety of mediums and approaches will be displaying their work in response to this year’s brief: “What does faith mean to you as a woman?”.
A Scottish folk singer’s mining heritage struck a chord with a University of Dundee student who has created artwork for a new exhibition.
Culann Mackay, a third-year Illustration student at the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), has created a new print based on a recorded conversation from Fife musician Barbara Dymock.
