I’m fortunate and proud to be able to say that I’ve been a part of Milwaukee’s creative economy for several decades. I’ve never seen it as vibrant or as multi-faceted as it is today; my heartfelt respect to everyone in our city who is working together to light a creative path forward for themselves and for others.

I started my career as an arts and culture journalist while studying at UW-Milwaukee and have worked in many creative capacities since then. Now, as the Curator and Art Program Manager for Northwestern Mutual’s Art Collection, I use artwork to help create vibrant, welcoming, inclusive spaces. I also activate the artwork to provide engaging cultural experiences that help us connect to each other and to the community.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art has appointed Hwang Sun-woo as its inaugural Korea Foundation Curator of Korean Art and Culture.

Hwang will shape a major Korean art loan exhibition scheduled for 2025–2026 with the National Museum of Korea, featuring masterworks recently donated by the family of former Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee.

Hwang was selected for the position in April, which was made possible by a matching gift from the Korea Foundation to promote Korean art. She served as the Korea Foundation Global Challenger intern at the National Museum of Asian Art in 2018 and then began a five-year curatorial training fellowship which concluded in 2023.

The paintings had been at the center of a gender battle that broke out after a man from the Australian state of New South Wales took legal action against the gallery after being refused entry to the museum’s “Ladies Lounge” exhibition.

Kirsha Kaechele, the museum’s curator, previously told Guardian Australia that the men’s “experience of rejection is the artwork” and that she was “absolutely delighted” that the case had gone to court.
