To commemorate the 54th anniversary of Earth Day, EARTH DAY NETWORK INDIA launched a distinctive competition to focus on the Earth Day 2024 theme ‘Planet vs. Plastics’ that advocated for a decrease in plastic production and consumption, as well as the responsible management of any waste.
The contest invited young “Artists for the Earth” to create original artworks centred around this theme, with the goal of nurturing a sense of environmental consciousness and creativity among the younger generation, thereby fostering optimism for a more sustainable future. In homage to the harmonious relationship between Indigenous peoples and nature, the artistic styles utilized were limited to recognized folk art forms in India.

5 Indian Modernist Artists with Market Momentum
Much like the country’s economy, India’s art market is growing—fast. Recent years have seen an influx of new collectors, galleries, institutions, and art fairs, which, taken together, are actively fostering a burgeoning contemporary art scene.
Much of this growth is illustrated by the country’s auction houses, which saw total turnover surge from $1.46 million to $144.3 million between 2002 and 2023, according to Grant Thornton Bharat and the Indian Art Investor. In fact, last year was the most successful yet for Indian art auctions, and the momentum is being carried into 2024, marked by a nearly 40% rise in buyers, driven by newcomers.

‘THE RED CHADOR’: TACOMA ARTIST ANIDA YOEU ALI DEMANDS TO BE SEEN
On Saturday, June 1, I walked into a busy Volunteer Park, with cars lining the road. It was a cloudy, misty Saturday morning as a crowd came together in front of the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM). After a few minutes of anticipation, seven women, fully covered in sequined red, gold, blue, green, purple, orange, and violet chadors, walked out of SAAM and toward the center of the park. The chadoras walked through the crowd, speaking only through gestures, bestowing peace and warmth on everyone.
People greeted the chadoras, who responded with their hands on their hearts. They proceeded along the path to the museum steps, with the crowd following. With that, the Volunteer Park portion of the show came to a close, and the chadoras left to make their way to the next part of the show, Westlake Park, and ultimately the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) in Downtown Seattle.
