Mandy Stobo, a Calgary artist most popularly known for her series of celebrity caricatures titled Bad Portraits, is finding innovative ways to share her creative expression with the world as the contemporary art scene turns digital.

The vibrancy of Stobo’s personality reflects that of the canvases that cover the walls of her brightly lit Calgary studio compared to her previous space — a dimly lit basement in dire need of repairs.

An art exhibition showcasing 101 works by 66 contemporary Russian artists from the private collection of Indian poet, artist, and diplomat Abhay K., was inaugurated at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi. The event was held to mark Russia Day and was opened by Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov in the presence of Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA, along with other Indian and foreign dignitaries. The exhibition highlights the creative diversity of Russia.

Speaking at the event, Abhay K. expressed, “This collection is a work of love and passion. It’s likely the only significant known collection of contemporary Russian art in India, showcasing Russia’s rich and varied visual culture. Part of this collection was exhibited in June 2011 at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in New Delhi. I’m delighted that after 13 years, the entire collection is being displayed at IGNCA. It’s a rare opportunity for art lovers in Delhi to explore the rich world of Russian art.”

About the Exhibition

“I have introduced neon into my studio practice and quickly found a deep affinity for it over the last year. Neon glass and concrete share certain qualities; they’re both liquid in their workable state, and both become brittle solids which can be strong yet fragile. To make some of these sculptures, I have formed ropes from fiber and cement, and made weavings around neons that both hold them up and tie them down.

Re-envisioning the modern and contemporary collection

The Chrysler Museum is pleased to present a new vision for its McKinnon Galleries for the permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. Collections are intrinsically tied to the identity of their institutions with a heightened awareness of how these spaces are presented to the public. The onset of the global pandemic abruptly halted exhibition planning and compelled temporary closures—an eye opener for many museums. In addition to the potential for disruption, external drivers such as rising costs associated with all aspects of exhibition-making, awareness of carbon footprint, and demands for increased representation in collections have inspired a deeper appreciation for the treasures at home. A re-investment in our collections reflects a look inwards, and in tandem with a new brand, the process has our institution considering what values we wish to uphold as we look to the future.
