SUMMARY:Michelangelo\, Leonardo\, Raphael
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the 16th century\, three titans of the Italian Renaissance – Michelangelo\, Leonardo and Raphael – briefly crossed paths\, competing for the attention of the most powerful patrons in Republican Florence. \n\n\n\n\nOn 25 January 1504\, Florence’s most prominent artists met to advise on an appropriate location for Michelangelo’s nearly finished David. Among them was Leonardo da Vinci\, who – like Michelangelo – had only recently returned to his native Florence. \nStarting with Michelangelo’s celebrated Taddei Tondo\, this exhibition explores the rivalry between Michelangelo and Leonardo and the influence both had on the young Raphael. \nSee some of the finest examples of Italian Renaissance drawing\, including Leonardo’s Burlington House Cartoon and the studies by Leonardo and Michelangelo for their murals commissioned by the Florentine government for the newly constructed council hall in the Palazzo Vecchio. \nExhibition organised by the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in partnership with Royal Collection Trust and the National Gallery\, London.

SUMMARY:Angelica Kauffman
DESCRIPTION:Angelica Kauffman RA was one of the most celebrated artists of the 18th century. In this major exhibition\, we trace her trajectory from child prodigy to one of Europe’s most sought-after painters. \n\n\n\n\nKnown for her celebrity portraits and pioneering history paintings\, Angelica Kauffman helped to shape the direction of European art. She painted some of the most influential figures of her day – queens\, countesses\, actors and socialites – and she reinvented the genre of history painting by focusing largely on female protagonists from classical history and mythology. \nThis exhibition covers Kauffman’s life and work: her rise to fame in London\, her role as a founding member of the Royal Academy and her later career in Rome where her studio became a hub for the city’s cultural life. \nSee paintings and preparatory drawings by Kauffman\, including some of her finest self-portraits\, her celebrated ceiling paintings for the Royal Academy’s first home in Somerset House\, as well as history paintings of subjects including Circe and Cleopatra\, and discover the remarkable life of the artist whom one of her contemporaries described as “the most cultivated woman in Europe”.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: David Hockney: Drawing from Life
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery’s autumn programme will see the return of the five-star exhibition\, ‘David Hockney: Drawing from Life’\, which was staged for just 20 days before the Gallery’s closure due to Covid in March 2020. \nThe exhibition explores the artist’s work over the last six decades through his intimate portraits of five sitters: his mother\, Celia Birtwell\, Gregory Evans\, Maurice Payne and the artist himself. His familiarity with the sitters enables him to work with a range of mediums and styles\, from pencil\, pen and ink and crayon\, to photographic collage and the iPad. The 2023 exhibition will also debut a selection of over thirty new portraits. \nPainted from life they depict friends and visitors to the artist’s Normandy studio between 2021 and 2022.

SUMMARY:7 SELF PORTRAITS | SIT/ STAND/ KNELL – GLOBAL WARMING\, THE FACTORY\, AND THE SAINTS
DESCRIPTION:Pop-Art pioneer Derek Boshier presents two brand new bodies of work for his much anticipated solo exhibition at Gazelli Art House. 7 Self Portraits sees Boshier reflect and reimagine his own artistic legacy; Sit/ Stand/ Knell – Global Warming\, The Factory\, and The Saints offers astute social commentary across intricate drawings. \nIn 7 Self Portraits\, Boshier reassembles his artistic output\, themes\, and contexts and\, in-so-doing\, redefines the notion of a self-portrait. In what Boshier terms “Archival Self-Portraits” his journey is presented as a visual narrative that charts especially transformative years\, intertwining life and art. Each distinct work is intricately woven with images and themes from a specific year\, providing an intimate\, somewhat polymorphic\, depiction of self. \nSit/ Stand/ Knell – Global Warming\, The Factory\, and The Saints are simultaneously personal and universal; complex subjects are tackled with as much delicacy and honesty as their pencil on paper depiction. Outlines of figures are suspended in seas of leaves\, clouds\, swirling lines of abstraction\, and crucifixes\, their insides a visual tableaux of activity. \nThe exhibition coincides with a survey exhibition of Boshier’s work at Wolverhampton Art Gallery Derek Boshier: Image in Revolt and the publication of a major new monograph Derek Boshier: Reinventor\, published by Lund Humphries\, edited by Helen Little\, and featuring commentaries and reflections by leading contemporary artists\, academics\, curators and writers.

SUMMARY:El Anatsui\, Hyundai Commission
DESCRIPTION:Tate Modern and Hyundai Motor announce that El Anatsui will create the next annual Hyundai Commission. One of the most distinctive artists working today\, El Anatsui is best-known for his cascading metallic sculptures constructed of thousands of recycled bottle-tops articulated with copper wire. Repurposing found materials into dazzling works of abstract art\, Anatsui’s work explores themes that include the environment\, consumption and trade. His site-specific work for the Turbine Hall will be open to the public from 10 October 2023 – 14 April 2024. Anatsui was born in Anyako\, Ghana in 1944 and has spent most of his career in Nigeria. Over a long-lasting and distinguished career as both artist and educator – serving as Professor of Sculpture and Departmental Head at the University of Nigeria\, Nsukka – Anatsui has developed a highly experimental approach to sculpture\, embracing a wide range of forms and materials including wood\, ceramics and found objects. He has experimented with liquor bottle tops since the late 90s and continues to push the medium’s boundaries in novel ways\, creating radical\, transformative sculptures which assume new shapes with every installation. Interested in the changing histories of the objects he repurposes into shimmering sculptures\, Anatsui fuses specific local aesthetic traditions with the global history of abstraction. In 2015\, Anatsui was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia and his work is held in major collections around the world. Frances Morris\, Director of Tate Modern\, said: El Anatsui is responsible for some of the most unique and unforgettable sculptures in recent times and we are delighted that he will tackle the Turbine Hall this autumn for the annual Hyundai Commission. Anatsui’s much-loved Ink Splash II 2012 in Tate’s collection enchants visitors wherever it’s shown\, and we can’t wait to see how this inventive artist will approach a space like the Turbine Hall.” DooEun Choi\, Art Director of Hyundai Motor Company said: “El Anatsui’s works are distinguished by his dedication to exploring the transformative potential of art and his attention to histories. We look forward to seeing how El Anatsui transforms the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern for the eighth Hyundai Commission.” Since Tate Modern opened in 2000\, the Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world’s most memorable and acclaimed works of contemporary art\, reaching an audience of millions each year. The way artists have interpreted this vast industrial space has revolutionised public perceptions of contemporary art in the twenty-first century. The annual Hyundai Commission gives artists an opportunity to create new work for this unique context. The commissions are made possible by the long-term partnership between Tate and Hyundai Motor\, confirmed until 2026 as part of the longest initial commitment from a corporate partner in Tate’s history. \nEl Anatsui is curated by Osei Bonsu\, Curator\, International Art\, and Dina Akhmadeeva\, Assistant Curator\, International Art\, Tate Modern and will be accompanied by a new book from Tate Publishing.

SUMMARY:The Credit Suisse Exhibition Frans Hals
DESCRIPTION:Four hundred years since they were painted\, Frans Hals’s portraits still breathe with life. There’s the hint of a smile\, a hand resting nonchalantly on a hip\, and just occasionally\, a burst of laughter. \nHals was one of the most sought-after painters of his generation. A gifted artist whose deft brushwork was unparalleled\, he built his reputation on a new style of portrait – highly unusual in his time – that showed relaxed\, lively sitters\, often smiling\, and even laughing. \n17th-century Dutch audiences were enthralled\, and the popularity of his portraits earned him the status of Haarlem’s famous son. \nThis exhibition\, the first major retrospective of Hals in more than thirty years\, means a new generation can discover why he deserves his place as one of the greatest painters in Western art. \nSome 50 of Hals’s finest works will be brought together\, including the exceptional\, first-ever loan of his most famous picture\, ‘The Laughing Cavalier’ (1624)\, from the Wallace Collection. \nFrom small works to large group portraits\, genre scenes\, and marriage portraits reunited for the first time from international collections\, visitors will see the very best of his life’s work. \nExhibition organised by the National Gallery\, the Rijksmuseum\, Amsterdam\, and the Gemäldegalerie\, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin with the special collaboration of the Frans Hals Museum\, Haarlem

SUMMARY:Trevor Yeung: Soft ground
DESCRIPTION:Gasworks presents Soft ground\, the first UK solo exhibition by Trevor Yeung (b. Guangdong province; lives Hong Kong). Yeung’s work uses botanic ecology\, horticulture\, photography\, and installation as metaphors to understand social relations. Preoccupied by systems of control\, he often uses plants as cyphers\, borrowing from their structure\, care\, and maintenance to think about intimate and personal experiences. Intermingling plant\, animal\, spectator and participant\, Yeung’s work prompts us to consider how emotional and behavioural conditions in our everyday life are determined

SUMMARY:Rhea Dillon: An Alterable Terrain
DESCRIPTION:Tate Britain presents a new free exhibition of sculptural works by Rhea Dillon. Titled An Alterable Terrain\, the exhibition brings together a group of new and existing sculptures to explore Black women’s labour across histories and geographies. This will be the latest in Tate Britain’s ongoing Art Now series of free exhibitions showcasing emerging talent and highlighting the latest developments in contemporary British art. \nDillon (b. 1996\, London) is an artist\, writer and poet. Her practice spans painting\, filmmaking\, writing\, installation\, olfaction and sculpture\, and explores questions of diasporic Blackness. Using material histories alongside theories of minimalism and abstraction\, Dillon’s exhibition at Tate Britain conjures an expressive and poetic mode of storytelling through sculpture. \nAn Alterable Terrain presents a series of works that comprise fragments of an amorphous body. Six sculptures evoke the eyes\, mouth\, soul\, reproductive organs\, hands\, feet and lungs of a Black woman. Viewed together\, these disparate features underline the foundational role Black women’s physical\, reproductive and intellectual labour has played in the history of the British Empire. Dillon evokes these experiences through considered materials – crystal plates cast in soap\, molasses\, and the scent of sweat; dried calabashes collected from Jamaica; a net curtain like the one in her Jamaica-born grandmother’s house. \nWhile developing the works\, Dillon approached the gallery space as a container for the body – its roof and rafters evoking an overturned ship’s hull. Simultaneously\, the architecture conveys a human spine. These visual codes deeply enmesh with those of the slave ship\, recalling histories tethered to geographies of the transatlantic and experiences of transnational Black diasporas.

SUMMARY:A World in Common: Contemporary African Photograph
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together 36 artists from different generations and geographies\, this exhibition explores how photography and video have allowed artists to examine legacies of the past while imagining more hopeful futures. \nUnfolding across seven thematic sections\, the exhibition highlights contemporary perspectives on cultural heritage\, spirituality\, urbanisation and climate change\, revealing shared artistic visions that reclaim Africa’s histories and reimagine its place in the world. \nSince the invention of photography in the 19th century\, Africa has been broadly defined by Western images of its cultures and traditions. During the colonial period\, photography was used as a tool to construct the representation of African societies through a Eurocentric lens. \nChallenging these dominant images of the continent\, the exhibition features around 100 works that illuminate how photography can imagine alternative visions of Africa’s many histories\, cultures and identities. Regal portraits of kings and queens join intimate scenes of family life\, fading archival postcards of vanishing cities\, and stark documentary images of post-industrial ruin. \nFamily photo albums and stylishly composed studio portraits reflect the shared sense of community and belonging that connects Africa and its global diaspora\, while scenes of devastated coastlines and otherworldly landscapes consider the growing impact of the climate emergency on the world we inhabit. Guiding viewers along many landscapes\, borders\, and time zones\, the exhibition showcases how photography allows the past and future to co-exist in powerful and unexpected ways.

SUMMARY:The Van de Veldes: Greenwich\, Art and the Sea
DESCRIPTION:From across the sea\, an art revolution is coming. Discover the art of the Van de Veldes at the Queen’s House. \nThe National Maritime Museum holds the largest collection of the Van de Veldes’ artwork in the world and is a longstanding centre of Van de Velde expertise. \nThis exhibition celebrates these forgotten masters and their practice\, marking 350 years since they arrived in England. It also reveals how the family’s legacy as renowned émigré artists transformed British visual culture and inspired future generations of artists including J.M.W. Turner. \nFollowing Het Rampjaar\, or the Disaster Year of 1672\, the Van de Veldes moved from the Netherlands to England at the invitation of Charles II\, who awarded them a salary equivalent to that of his ‘Principal Painter’\, Sir Peter Lely\, and a studio at the Queen’s House. Together\, they became the founders of the English school of marine painting. \nFrom their Queen’s House studio\, their home for twenty years\, the Van de Veldes revolutionised marine painting in Britain and established a genre that persists today. By looking closely at the techniques and materials the father and son team employed\, as well as the physical environment in which they worked\, this exhibition will explain not only why they were two of the most esteemed artists\, but also how. \nOne of the most important objects in the exhibition will be the newly conserved painting\, A Royal Visit to the Fleet. It was worked on in their studio at the Queen’s House in the 1670s and\, at almost four metres across\, was the largest seascape Van de Velde the Younger had painted to date. The scale of the painting coupled with a low viewpoint lends it a dramatic\, panoramic quality. Following two years of conservation\, this commanding painting shows why the legacy of the Van de Veldes helped define English marine painting for the next two hundred years. \nAlso returning to display in this exhibition will be The Burning of the Royal James at the Battle of Solebay\, 28 May 1672\, otherwise known as ‘The Solebay Tapestry’. Originally part of a set of six\, it is the only Solebay Tapestry in the collection at the Queen’s House\, where the original cartoons were first designed by Van de Velde the Elder. In February 2022\, Royal Museums Greenwich partnered with the Art Fund to crowdfund £15\,000 to save the Solebay Tapestry. The campaign broke records\, reaching its target in a single day. This monumental tapestry has been saved from further deterioration and is able to return to display for the first time in over twenty years. \nDisplayed alongside these monumental works will be a selection of the 1400 drawings from the National Maritime Museum’s collection.
