UW-La Crosse art majors are presenting “Earth and Ink” — a group exhibition featuring the artwork of December graduates in the University Art Gallery in the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts. Earth and Ink features artwork that covers a diverse scope of mediums, applications and methods. It runs through Dec. 17, according to the news release.

The exhibition showcases the work of four graduating seniors, the first of which is Maiya Brandt, a ceramicist and photographer who grew up on a small hobby farm in Merton, Wisconsin. Her artistic journey began young while attending Prairie Hill Waldorf School, where watercolor and colored pencils were regularly practiced. At UW-L, she began pursuing a degree in art education, which evolved into an art major with a minor in photography. Currently, Brandt spends the majority of her time in the ceramics studio or hiking the surrounding bluffs with her camera in hand. Inspired by a lifelong fascination of birds, Brandt combines her photography with ceramics, inviting viewers to “contemplate the relationship between the foreground and background, between referent and object. From the gently curving forms to the rippled surface textures, each vessel mimics the characteristics observed in the photographs.”
