Technology keeps serving up new and innovative ways to invest in art, but the pleasure of traipsing through a dedicated affordable art fair is undimmed. Chatting with emerging artists, perusing the works, scouting for that perfect painting for home – and potentially identifying the next big thing – makes for a really satisfying day out, especially when you find a piece you’ll love forever.

Sydneysider Gail Minns has a growing collection of art. She attended her first Affordable Art Fair last year and will be back again when this year’s fair opens on June 15.

After founding de Sarthe in Paris in 1977, followed by spaces in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, French-American gallerist Pascal de Sarthe was joined in 2008 by his son Vincent, who spearheaded the gallery’s expansion to Beijing and then to Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2022. Their Beijing venture from 2014 to 2018 was the perfect example of their constant exchange of ideas and complicity. The gallery today represents the likes of Chan Ka Kiu, Eugene Lun, Caison Wang, Mak2, Zhong Wei, Lin Jingjing, Wang Xin, Emmett Potter, Kristin Bauer, Rick Levinson, Thomas Skomski and Zak Smith.

Did you have to convince your son to work with you in the family business or did he come to it naturally, having grown up immersed in art?

Leo Castelli, who cut his teeth as an insurance broker then banker in Paris, is considered to have invented the modern gallery system, but, as the Parisian gallerist Mathieu Capela points out, Castelli also operated much like an emerging dealer – working out of small spaces, recruiting recent graduates, and collaborating with other galleries including the French dealer Daniel Templon.

Since 1957, when Castelli founded his own gallery in his family apartment in New York, the art world has gone from cottage industry to multi-billion-dollar business. Nonetheless, for many gallerists starting out today, Castelli’s core principle of establishing tight-knit relationships with artists still stands. ‘No one wants to be an eternal gold digger, just finding artists and then losing them,’ says Capela, who co-founded his gallery cadet capela with Julien Cadet in 2018. ‘Our aim is to support our artists in their journeys for as long as we can.’
