The pieces included in Sarah Zapata’s solo exhibition “Beneath the breath of the sun” are rich with texture, color and references to her identity as a queer woman of Peruvian heritage raised in evangelical south Texas.

Created in the fall of 2023 while Zapata was in residence in Phoenix, the exhibition also showcases the partnership between CALA Alliance and ASU Art Museum, which aims to promote the exchange of new ideas, perspectives and experiences among artists, students and the public through various programs, especially those that educate and inspire the public about the richness of the Latino cultural heritage.

“As the first national resident at CALA Alliance,” Zapata said, “I’m so excited to show this new installation, made in such an interesting and specific place, at the ASU Art Museum. Arizona exists with such beautiful and complicated lineages, with a rich material culture that is simultaneously historical and prescient.”

In collaboration with Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, Newtown Public Schools will be showcasing student art at the municipal center the first two weeks of April. Featuring the artwork of students throughout the district, the annual presentation will provide the opportunity to highlight the artistic excellence of Newtown children of all ages.

A public reception is planned for Tuesday, April 2, from 5-7 pm, during which guests will have the opportunity to enjoy face painting, music, and snacks as the exhibits are officially unveiled to the public.

“Every kid wants to show their parents their art and it is packed,” said Laura Lerman, chair of the cultural arts commission. The commission originally initiated the art show tradition when they assumed curation responsibility for the Newtown Municipal Art Gallery, she shared.

The exhibit will be on display April 1-12 in the central hall of the Newtown Municipal Center. The building, at 3 Primrose Street, is generally open weekdays between 8 am and 4:30 pm. The art can also be viewed evenings when Town boards and commissions are meeting at the municipal center.
