A Nepali activist’s dream of close-knit South Asia

LAHORE: Kanak Mani Dixit, the Nepali journalist, activist and founder of the Travelling Film South Asia Festival, is all for close cultural linkages between countries of the region, especially between the border provinces and states of Pakistan and India for progress.

He was in Lahore where an edition of the documentary film festival happened from Sept 22 to 24. Dawn had an in-depth discussion with him at the Olomopolo Media in between the documentary shows.

Kanak, the founding editor of Himal South Asian, is basically a print journalist with deep interest in long-form journalism. This interest led him to launching a documentary festival.

South Asian Artists Confront Oppression with Joy

In the 14th century, the Indian poet and spiritual leader Guru Ravidas imagined a utopia called Begampura. This “land without sorrow,” as Begampura translates from Hindi, would be casteless, classless, and griefless. Free from anxieties and discrimination, inhabitants could pursue spiritual freedom.

A modern reinterpretation of Begampura undergirds Dalit Dreamlands: Toward an Anti-Caste Future, a multimedia group art show currently on display in downtown Oakland.

“Con/temporality: Contemporary Aesthetics in Our Times” Exhibition Showcases South Asian Artistic Innovation

The Arts Family London and 079|STORIES, Ahmedabad, are thrilled to collaborate on “Con/temporality: Contemporary Aesthetics in Our Times,” an exhibition featuring a selection of South Asian artists celebrating the dynamic spirit of contemporary artistic practices in South Asia. This exceptional showcase will run from April 19th to May 10th, 2024, at 079|STORIES in Ahmedabad, with a special preview on April 19th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

The exhibition proudly features artists shortlisted for the recent TAF Emerging Artist Award – South Asia (2nd edition), including three finalists selected from a competitive pool of over 1000 applicants worldwide. These artists embody the diverse contemporary aesthetics and perspectives emerging from South Asia today.
