A kiss, a queen and a battered Venus: the Art Fund celebrates 120 years of saving art

This week the national charity for art, established on 11 November 1903, reaches its 120th birthday. Here are a few highlights of the great works it has helped to save for the nation.
Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus was acquired for the nation in 1906, the first campaigning triumph of the newly formed Art Fund, established in 1903 prompted by the government’s inadequate museum funding. Despite opposition to the subject matter, condition and attribution of Velázquez’s painting, the Art Fund continued its campaign, and evidence suggests the final balance was made by King Edward VII. The Art Fund presented the painting to the National Gallery in March 1906

Euro 2024: Spectacular England Three Lions sand art appears on Bridlington beach to celebrate win over Slovakia

Drone footage has captured the incredible Three Lions beach art which was sketched into the sand at Bridlington to celebrate England’s big win against Slovakia at the UEFA Euros on 30/06/24.

Aerial video shows an impressive beach drawing that was sketched at South Beach in Bridlington – to mark England’s success at the Euros last night (30 June). The gigantic three-lions logo was etched into the sand by artist Fred Brown – before it was gradually swept away by the tide. The impressive artwork was captured by Yorkshire snapper, Darren Norton Photography.

Incredible scenes of drinkers in Swansea town centre have gone viral this morning, and they’re reminiscent of a renaissance painting.

The last Friday night before Christmas has become notorious for alcohol-fueled antics, meaning it’s come to be known as Mad Friday or Black Eye Friday.
