Aspen Art Fair Debuts in Colorado, Looted Asante Treasures Find New Home in Ghana, Sex Pistols Record Breaks Record at Auction, and More: Morning Links for July 11, 2024
Known for winter sports and other outdoor recreation, Aspen, Colorado, has become increasingly celebrated as an art destination, reports The Art Newspaper. The Aspen Art Week brings together collectors, curators and artists in a culture festival co-ordinated by Aspen Art Museum. This summer, the Aspen Art Fair (29 July-2 August) joins in with a debut at the high-profile Hotel Jerome, in the city center. About 30 exhibitors and projects—from Los Angeles (Carlye Packer, Casterline Goodman), New York (Miles McEnery, Nancy Hoffman) and abroad (El Apartamento from Havana and Madrid, Galerie Gmurzynska from Zürich, Perrotin from Paris)—are in the art fair’s lineup. Admission to the event costs $30 per day, except for those statying at the hotel who get complimentary passes. “It’s really important to us to be part of the citywide cultural conversation year round,” said Becca Hoffman, the director of the fair.

My Small Gallery Lost Money at an Art Fair. It Hurt.
On the plane back from Miami, I add up expenses versus income from this year’s Untitled Art Fair. It is our third year here, and our first bust. As a small Midwestern gallery, two major art fairs a year — Untitled in Miami and the Outsider Art Fair in New York — can generate a quarter of our annual income. Even more importantly, they help us develop a national collector base for regional artists. There is no other way to survive.
It is expensive to participate in more selective and carefully curated international fairs, such as Untitled. Our three-walled, 14 x 14-foot space cost $17,400. Housing for the staff, transportation, food, and additional framing rounded out the total to about $30,000.
