The Defining Art Events of 2023
If the art world in 2023 could be defined by one word, it would probably be scandal. From the multiple crises that embroiled the British Museum to investigations on human remains implicating the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History, to say nothing of the near constant seizures and repatriations across the institutional sphere, this was the year museums took a beating.
Architect David Adjaye, advisor Lisa Schiff, and Yayoi Kusama all found themselves in hot water, while the fallout over the October 7 attack in Israel by the militant group Hamas and the resulting war on Gaza continues to upend the art world.
With the lure of a luxury beachfront apartment for the weekend, I head to Folkestone on the coast of Kent, which is only an hour from London by train, but I drive there from Brighton.
I arrive at the award-winning Shoreline development and the garage doors’ camera recognises my car’s license plate and swing open. I park and then enter the apartment from the garage to find a very bright and welcoming home.
Renowned British artist and Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid has been selected to represent the UK at the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026, marking another milestone in her groundbreaking career.
Himid, known for her vibrant, thought-provoking work that explores race, history, and cultural identity, will take over the British Pavilion with a major solo exhibition of new work. The British Council, which commissions the UK’s representative for the prestigious event, made the announcement earlier today.

A talk on a renowned 20th-century British artist will replace a previously postponed event in Dunmow.
Dunmow Art Group was set to host a talk by Janet Dyson on the Bardfield Artists on January 15.
However, due to illness, this has been postponed, however Pauline Hockley has now stepped in to deliver a talk on John Piper.
John Piper was an English painter, printmaker, and stained-glass artist.
