Art fair sales demonstrate dampening of market a myth

Sydney Contemporary swept on to the calendar for another edition last week. There was a little trepidation ahead of the event, with the sector noticeably feeling a slight cooling of the market in recent months. However, it appears to be all myth!

Australia’s leading art fair recorded over $21 million in art sales over the five-day event. It was slightly down on 2022, which achieved $23 million in sales, but is still growing upwards, with pre-COVID numbers in 2019 sitting at $18 million.

Organisers added that they expect the sales figure to rise over the coming days, as post fair-related sales are continuing.

Another “first” is on the way for our busy Atlanta art community — the inaugural Atlanta Art Fair is coming to Pullman Yards from Oct. 3 through 6.

The fair will host a who’s who of galleries, from local contributors to international, alongside artworks by over 100 of the most exciting contemporary artists working today. Atlanta Art Fair Director Kelly Freeman and Atlanta curator Karen Comer Lowe joined “City Lights” Managing Producer Kim Drobes to discuss Atlanta’s exciting new art fair.

“For us, education is everything, as well as accessibility,” Freeman said, explaining their approach and main goals with bringing an art fair of this scale to Atlanta. “What you have in this one defined space is access to some of the leading experts in the industry on the artists that they represent. The best thing an attendee can do within the space is to go up to the gallerist, go up to the curator and ask questions.”

London’s luxury art fairs are struggling in post-Brexit Britain

Published

This year began uncomfortably for London’s fragile, post-Brexit art market with news that the Masterpiece fair, held in Chelsea since 2010, was no more. The official line was that the event had been ‘postponed’, but as its staff move on to other roles and another fair has lined itself up in its place, no one really believes Masterpiece will be back.

The news came as a surprise. In a crowded field, Masterpiece seemed to have a winning formula. Its broad offering, ranging from dinosaur skulls to digital art, was presented with a rare combination of connoisseurship and luxury. Plus, unlike other fairs that have come and gone over the decades, Masterpiece was held in the right place at the right time – namely during London’s tourist-friendly early summer season.
