Cube Art Fair, the World’s Largest Public Art Fair, returns to New York City for its 11th edition with a must-see public art exhibition coinciding with the highly anticipated Armory Week.

Founded in 2016, Cube Art Fair hosted in-person art fairs in New York City and Brussels. When COVID disrupted its fifth edition, it reinvented itself by showcasing digital artworks in public spaces across cities, converting the streets to a gallery space dedicated to artistic expression. The fair’s transformative displays have been projected on iconic buildings and hundreds of billboards across New York, Miami, and Brussels as canvases for artistic expression. Its innovative approach has redefined the traditional concept of an art fair.

My Small Gallery Lost Money at an Art Fair. It Hurt.

On the plane back from Miami, I add up expenses versus income from this year’s Untitled Art Fair. It is our third year here, and our first bust. As a small Midwestern gallery, two major art fairs a year — Untitled in Miami and the Outsider Art Fair in New York — can generate a quarter of our annual income. Even more importantly, they help us develop a national collector base for regional artists. There is no other way to survive.

It is expensive to participate in more selective and carefully curated international fairs, such as Untitled. Our three-walled, 14 x 14-foot space cost $17,400. Housing for the staff, transportation, food, and additional framing rounded out the total to about $30,000.
